Kevin Tvrdy, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln senior from Wahoo, won the national championship in persuasive speaking at the American Forensics Association National Tournament earlier this month at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
Tvrdy's win helped the Cornhusker speech and debate team finish eighth in the team sweepstakes competition, won by Illinois State University. Tvrdy became UNL's fourth individual national champion in the last five years, joining Omahans Katie Kock (informative speaking in 2001) and Juanita Page (programmed oral interpretation in 2003 and informative speaking in 2004).
In other top UNL performances, Todd West, a junior from Bellevue, captured fourth place in persuasive speaking and freshman Christine Osborn of Lincoln was a semifinalist in communication analysis. UNL also had five quarterfinalists: freshman Bill Fech of Cody, Wyo., and West in programmed oral interpretation; Fech in after-dinner speaking; freshman Jessica Clark of Wallace in prose interpretation; and sophomore Andrew Stewart of Elmwood in poetry interpretation.
