Lincoln, Neb., April 29th, 2005 —

Tau Sigma of Nebraska inducted 79 new members in a ceremony April 10. Tau Sigma was incorporated in 1999 at Auburn University by a former transfer student. The Nebraska chapter was one of the first 15 in the nation with a total number of chapters nearing 40. This academic honor society is specifically designed to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"It can be difficult for transfer students to become involved on campus. Some honor societies have residency requirements which may exclude transfer students. Tau Sigma gives transfer students the opportunity to become involved early and to become campus leaders based on their academic achievement in their first semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln," said JoAnn Moseman, academic transfer coordinator and chapter adviser.

To be eligible for membership in Tau Sigma, a student must transfer with one year of academic credit, must be a full-time, degree-seeking student and must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in the first semester at UNL.

"Transition and Scholarship" is the motto of this organization, which encourages members to continue academic excellence and to become leaders on campus. Tau Sigma also provides opportunities for service. Members have unique insight into the specific needs and concerns of students transferring to UNL and have assisted in several recruitment and retention efforts, reaching out to new students to help make their transition a smooth one. One of the most popular efforts has been an electronic community for new transfer students.

More information about the national honor society is available on its Web site (http://frontpage.auburn.edu/tausigma) or from Moseman at (402) 472-9455.
