The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries, the University of Nebraska Press, and the Center for Great Plains Studies at UNL have announced that a collaborative project to create an online edition of the "Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" is two months ahead of schedule with the main text now online.

The National Endowment for the Humanities, a major funder supporting the creation of this electronic resource, called the "Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Online" a "truly significant and timely project" that has deep impact on how users view the American experience.

The online version of Gary Moulton's edition of the journals can be found at http://lewisandclarkjournals.unl.edu.

According to Katherine Walter, chair of the Libraries' Digital Initiatives and Special Collections at UNL Libraries and co-director of the project, additional materials will continue to be added to the site, including audio perspectives from native peoples to provide balance, maps and supplemental texts.

"The goal of the project is to create an online scholarly resource that also appeals to the public," Walter said.

"It is immensely satisfying to see the precious observations and unforgettable experiences of the Corps of Discovery online. The University of Nebraska Press, as publisher of Gary Moulton's definitive edition of the Lewis and Clark journals, is proud to be a partner in this project," said Gary Dunham, director of the NU Press.
