Lincoln, Neb., May 31st, 2005 —

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering & Technology is set to host the 2005 Nebraska MESA (Math Engineering, Science Achievement) Summer on Campus. The MESA program, which runs June 5-10, encourages students of color to take advantage of the rewarding opportunities available to them in technology-related fields through a variety of activities and educational resources.

Throughout the academic year, MESA offers ACT preparation classes for juniors and seniors in Omaha Public Schools, campus visits, a reunion for juniors and seniors with graduates of the program, a math/science activity for freshmen and sophomores, a college application night and a visit to the College of Engineering & Technology.

The summer program, held annually in June, is open to underrepresented students in Nebraska who demonstrate an interest in science and math. The dynamic program comprises two concurrent one-week sessions -- one for students completing the eighth grade and another for students in grades 9-11. All participants reside in Neihardt Residence Hall on the UNL Campus for the duration of the program. Students spend the week learning about the tangible ways in which math and science translate into real world experiences through industry tours, a meeting with a representative from UNL Admissions, interactive workshops and a family picnic. The experience culminates with an awards ceremony. The program is free to participants thanks to financial support from the university and private industry.
