Tom Laging, professor of architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been named the UNL College of Architecture's first Scott Killinger professor of urban design.
The appointment carries an annual award of $5,000 for the next two academic years. The professorship was created through a gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation by Scott Killinger of Philadelphia.
A member of the Nebraska faculty since 1967, Laging was honored in 1992 as the first James Elmore visiting professor in urban design at Arizona State University in Tempe. A graduate faculty fellow at UNL, he received design awards for his work on the Nebraska State Capitol Environs and was a Fulbright senior lecturer at Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela.
Laging's service to Nebraska communities has resulted in an interdisciplinary program with architecture and community and regional planning students that combines teaching with urban design assistance. As leader of design assistance teams for the American Institute of Architects, he has contributed to urban design efforts in cities throughout the country. He is a member of AIA's Urban Design Committee.
Killinger, who earned his bachelor of architecture degree at Nebraska, has more than 40 years' experience in the planning and design of new communities, mixed-use residential projects, waterfront development projects and campus master plans. In addition to projects in the United States, he has developed numerous new communities, universities and sports facilities overseas. He is a founding partner in the Philadelphia-based firm Kise Straw & Kolodner and a partner in the Beijing-based firm Kuang Xing Design.
