Week Without Violence events Oct. 12-15

Lincoln, Neb., October 5th, 2005 —

Domestic violence is historically the most prolific violent crime that occurs in Lincoln. During the 11th-annual Week Without Violence, staff and volunteers with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Women's Center hopes to educate the community on domestic violence issues through numerous educational opportunities. Registration is not required for any of these free events.

A schedule of events follows:

Oct. 12: "Knit-In for Non-Violence," booth in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Women's Center knitting group will unravel the threads of violence in society and create a healthier community through fiber arts and discussion.

Oct. 13: "Speak-Out Against Violence," Union Square, Nebraska Union, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Members of the UNL and Lincoln communities are invited to take a stand against all forms of violence by making a speech, reading a poem or prose, or singing a song.

Oct. 13: "Healthy Relationships Workshop," Culture Center, 333 N. 14th St., 6-7:15 p.m. Learn the fundamentals of a healthy relationship. Workshop co-sponsors: Office of Academic Support and Intercultural Services (OASIS), Sigma Lambda Beta, and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.

Oct. 17: "Healing Circle," Rape/Spouse Abuse Crisis Center, 2545 N St., 7:30-9 p.m. An opportunity for women to release pain and heal the wounds inflicted by rape, sexual abuse, child abuse, sexual harassment and/or abuse by an intimate partner. Free child care and refreshments provided.

Oct. 19: Rape/Spouse Abuse Crisis Center open house and candlelight vigil, 2545 N St.; open house, 5-7:30 p.m., candlelight vigil, 7:30 p.m. Individuals who want to walk to these events with a group should contact the Women's Center, (402) 472-2597.

Oct. 25: "Sexpectations," Culture Center, 6-7:15 p.m. Learn to build heterosexual relationships built on reality rather then stereotypes. This entertaining, interactive workshop is co-sponsored by OASIS, the Women's Center, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.
