The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Melvin W. Jones Scholars Learning Community and Jones Scholars alumni will observe a community service week Dec. 5-9 of awareness-building and fund-raising for the homeless and Lincoln People's City Mission.
Activities include a sleep-out to end homelessness, a snack bag project for homeless and hungry and a Dec. 9 forum, "Issues Facing the Homeless," a discussion to provide insight into issues of poverty. The forum begins at 3 p.m. in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St.
The Jones Scholars Learning Community is a group of UNL freshmen from diverse backgrounds who live together, take classes together, and have faculty/staff support. Named for Melvin W. Jones, the late vice chancellor for business and finance at UNL, the Jones Scholars' mission is to build academics, leadership and community. Colleen Jones, clinical assistant professor of management and assistant to the chancellor, advises the group, now in its second year. Jones Scholar alumni are students who have completed their freshman year but continue to work in both the Lincoln and university communities. Students apply to and are considered for the community based on their interests.
The service project is part of the learning community's program.
Events during the week include:
Monday, Dec. 5, 3 p.m.: "Grab-A-Snack" preparation, UNL Culture Center, 333 N. 14th St. Jones Scholars will put together snack bags for the homeless; community members are welcome to participate.
