The Kruger Collection of miniature furnishings and decorative arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host an exhibition that pays tribute to the history of barns in Nebraska's ethnic communities from Jan. 23 through March 9.
The traveling exhibit, "Barns of Nebraska's Ethnic Communities," was part of the Smithsonian Institution's "Barn Again! Celebrating an American Icon" exhibit and features a 1:48 scale model cut-away of a working barn. The scale miniature is a replica of a barn built in Washington County in the mid-1920s. "Miniatures act as an illustrative representation of history," said Amber Mohr, curator of the Kruger Collection. "The miniature replica is an accurate portrayal of building techniques as well as a depiction of the various functions of a working barn."
"Barns of Nebraska's Ethnic Communities" is a traveling exhibit from the Washington County Historical Association in Fort Calhoun and features photographs and text of several historic barns found across the state. "The display combines regional architectural history and miniature representation, making the Kruger Gallery a perfect venue," said Mohr.
The exhibit will be presented along with the exhibition "A Global View of Interior Design," which explores furniture use and design of various world cultures and the influence of outside cultures on American and European interior design. "The two exhibitions mix cultures and design, and present an interesting juxtaposition," Mohr said. "A Global View of Interior Design" is on display until March 17.
The Kruger Gallery is on the first floor of Architecture Hall-West, 10th and R streets on the UNL City Campus. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday or by appointment. For more information or to schedule a tour, call (402) 472-3560. The Kruger Collection was founded in 1997 with the donation of Eloise Kruger's 20,000-piece collection of 1:12 scale miniatures. Kruger began assembling her collection in the late 1930s and it includes the work of top miniature artists.
