Lincoln, Neb., January 25th, 2006 —

Jamar Banks has been named director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Office of Academic Support and Intercultural Services.

Banks' appointment was effective Jan. 1, after he had served as interim director of OASIS since February.

OASIS supports all UNL students, although it places an emphasis on supporting students of color -- giving them and minority student organizations an opportunity to be in a familiar environment.

Banks came to UNL in 2000 after serving four years as a juvenile probation officer with the Lancaster County Juvenile Court in Lincoln. At UNL, he has served as interim assistant director and educational specialist with the Math/Science Upward Bound program, academic counselor and coordinator of multicultural programs for Intercollegiate Athletics, program coordinator-academic support for OASIS and associate director of the Summer Institute for Promising Scholars.

He received a bachelor's degree in speech communication and criminal justice from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in 1994 and a master's degree in educational leadership from UNL in 2004.
