Carole Levin awarded NEH fellowship at Folger Shakespeare Library

Carole Levin, Willa Cather professor and professor of history at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., during the 2006-07 academic year. Levin will work on her new book project, "Dreaming the English Renaissance: Politics and Desires in Court and Culture."

Levin has taught at UNL since 1998 and was named a Willa Cather professor in 2002. Her areas of specialization are late medieval and early modern English culture and women's history. Levin held a fellowship at the Newberry Library from the Monticello College Foundation and had a previous a long-term NEH fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library in 1991-92.

She has written numerous publications, including "Elizabeth I: Always Her Own Free Woman" (2003) and "The Reign of Elizabeth I" (2002). Her book, "The Heart and Stomach of a King: Elizabeth I and the Politics of Sex and Power" (1994), was listed by readers of the magazine Lingua Franca as one of the 10 best scholarly books of the last decade.

Levin also served as the senior historical consultant for the major exhibition, "Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend," which was mounted in 2003 by the Newberry Library in Chicago to commemorate the reign of Queen Elizabeth I on the 400th anniversary of her death. Levin continued her work with the Newberry Library's Center for Renaissance Studies, turning the exhibit into a national traveling exhibit.
