Lincoln, Neb., April 7th, 2006 —

The College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host E-Week, a celebration of engineers and engineering, April 16-21. This year's theme, "Engineering Outside the Cube," encourages students and participants to look beyond standard engineering practices and discover the many possibilities this offers.

E-Week activities include events for current students, such as a scavenger hunt, quiz bowl, Engineering Olympics and guest speakers. The Technology Expo, sponsored by UNL, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Lincoln Association, will be from 1 to 6 p.m. April 20 in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. Engineering senior design projects will be on display from 2 to 5 p.m. This event is open to the public.

"E-Week at UNL is a celebration of the excellence and hard work of the students and faculty in the College of Engineering," said Amy Dimick, a senior in biological systems engineering and chair of E-Week. "It's an opportunity for community members and prospective students to participate in fun events and to learn more about what students are doing in the college."

E-week culminates on April 21 with an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Othmer Hall, 17th and Vine streets. Prospective students, current students, parents, alumni and members of the community are invited to participate in student organization sponsored activities such as "Egg Drop," "Tower of Power," and "Build Your Own Bridge," take tours of the college and explore research laboratories. One of the most exciting aspects of the open house will be the display of innovative senior design projects and faculty research. A panel of alumni and industry volunteers will judge the senior project displays from both the Technology Expo and the E-Week open house. Winners receive cash prizes. Admission is free to E-Week, but registration is required. Online registration is available at www.nuengr.unl.edu/EWeek2006 until April 14.

Paul Schreier, a 2000 UNL computer engineering graduate, will be the guest speaker at the open house. Schreier, a product marketing manager with Philips Semiconductors, will speak from 11:15 a.m. to noon April 21 in Room 237 of the Walter Scott Engineering Center, 14th and W streets. His presentation will focus on the semiconductor industry, it's products and upcoming changes. The presentation is open to the public.

E-Week is sponsored by 17 companies, including Pella, Union Pacific and Lincoln Electric System. For more information on E-Week, contact Trish Fenster at (402) 472-7094 or visit the E-Week Web site.
