UNL Students in Free Enterprise team to compete in regional

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Students In Free Enterprise team will compete for cash prizes at the SIFE USA Regional Competition April 10 in Miami. The event is one of 17 SIFE USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States this spring.

Representing the team in Miami will be Kristin Stewart, a senior from O'Neill, Dave Bell, a junior from Brandon, S.D., Kyle Hathorn, a freshman from Gordon, and Chris Rosenberg, a sophomore from Hastings. The UNL SIFE team has won its regional competition for the last 18 years.

SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and business ethics. Their projects are judged at competition on creativity, innovation and effectiveness.

During this academic year, the 20 UNL SIFE team members have given 800 hours of their time for the betterment of the university and the community. They have organized 15 projects in the Lincoln community, including the Women in Business Benefit, four student-run businesses, ethics education to high school and college students, and resume-building exercises with high school students. The team also organized a market economics education project in Ghana and sent a team representative to teach free enterprise for six weeks last summer.

If UNL SIFE wins at the regional competition, the team will advance to the SIFE USA National Competition May 21-23 in Kansas City, Mo.
