UNL independent study high schoolers to have graduation June 9

Lincoln, Neb., June 7th, 2006 —

Eight students from the same graduating class will meet for the first time on June 9 when they don their cap and gown to receive their high school diplomas. They have never met each other-let alone their teachers or school officials-face-to-face, but will June 9 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School's annual graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Nebraska Union, 14th and R streets.

The eight students are representative of 157 graduates in the Independent Study High School class of 2006: students representing 27 states, 25 countries and a variety of backgrounds. The class includes home-schoolers, professional athletes, world travelers and more.

The commencement ceremony will include a keynote address from UNL educational administration professor Larry Dlugosh. Dlugosh will also present each graduate with his or her diploma. A reception following the ceremony will allow the students and their families to meet each other as well as the staff of the Independent Study High School.

The eight graduates attending the ceremony are: Gerald "Jerr" Merritt, Lincoln; Kristin Kaye, Northbrook, Ill.; Jaclyn Parise, Omaha; Jordan Johns, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Amanda Klammer, Wichita, Kan.; Amy McDonald, Moreno Valley, Calif.; Miya Naiditch, Oak Park, Ill.; and Jennifer Teasley, Kimball.

Established in 1929, the ISHS has been awarding high school diplomas since 1968, when it was accredited by the Nebraska Department of Education. The ISHS is also accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. The program allows students around the world to gain a real high school education in an independent study format. Offering courses for grades nine through 12, including a general education and college preparatory diploma program, the ISHS enrolls more than 3,000 students annually.
