With the goal of learning more about other cultures and global communications, 16 students and three faculty members from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications is studying in Berlin and Dresden, Germany, and Paris and Provence, France, this week and next.
The students, who will earn three course credits toward their degrees during UNL's first five-week summer session (June 5-July 7). In addition, they will have the chance to interact with communication professionals at the annual conference of the International Communication Association in Dresden, June 19-23. German media representatives will have the opportunity to interview students at PUBLICIS-Berlin on June 28. Students will describe their perceptions and expectations of Germany before traveling to Berlin and again after spending a week in the capital.
Frauke Hachtmann, assistant professor of advertising and a German native, will teach global advertising. The students will visit PUBLICIS and McCann Erickson, two international advertising and communications agencies in Berlin, to learn about creating cultural communication models without stereotypes.
Amy Struthers, assistant professor of advertising, will teach international media. Struthers, who has lived and worked in France and taught French at UNL for 10 years, will also teach an accelerated second-year French class. The students' classroom is Paris, the home of influential media outlets -- advertising agencies, newspapers, television stations and design studios. Students will study European media trends and write articles comparing specific issues within the Parisian culture with what they are familiar with at home in the United States.
Luis Peon-Casanova, news-editorial lecturer, will teach basic photography in Provence, France, one of the most picturesque regions in Europe. Saint Cecile, the hub for this class, inspired many classic painters, writers and filmmakers.
During the two weeks, the students plan to post regular updates in the form of stories, photographs and audio clips on the College of Journalism and Mass Communications' NewsNetNebraska Web site (www.newsnetnebraska.org). Students are writing a daily blog about their travel experiences at http://cojmcstudyabroad.blogspot.com.
