New Nebraskan, Nebraska Legacy, transfer scholarships awarded

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has awarded approximately 450 New Nebraskan, Nebraska Legacy or Midwest Student Exchange Program scholarships to students from 38 states across the United States.

Scholarships for New Nebraskans were created in 1995 to identify and reward the most talented students from states other than Nebraska who choose to attend UNL. The scholarships are awarded based on transfer grade-point averages for transfer students, or on academic accomplishments in high school and admissions test scores for 2006 high school graduates.

New Nebraskan scholarships are awarded at three levels covering all or part of the differential between in-state and out-of-state tuition. For 30 credit hours in 2006-07, full tuition differential scholarships will be worth $9,450; those that cover 66 percent of the differential will be worth $6,235; and those that cover 25 percent of the differential will be worth $2,362.

The three levels of the scholarships were named to honor three prominent UNL alumni. Full tuition-differential scholarships were named George Beadle Scholarships in honor of the 1926 graduate who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in physiology for his work in plant genetics; the 66 percent tuition-differential scholarships were named Ruth Leverton scholarships in honor of the pioneering nutritionist (class of 1928); and the 25 percent tuition-differential scholarships were named Aaron Douglas Scholarships in honor of the 1922 graduate who has been described as the father of African-American art and was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance movement.

The Nebraska Legacy Scholarship rewards the most talented students who are children of University of Nebraska graduates who reside in states other than Nebraska. This academic scholarship is in recognition of the student's transfer grade-point average or high school academic record and admission test scores, as well as the alumni relationship of his or her parent or parents with the University of Nebraska. The scholarship is awarded at two levels, covering all or 50% of the tuition differential between in-state and out-of-state tuition.

Midwest Student Exchange Program Scholarships are awarded to students from Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, North Dakota or Wisconsin who exhibit superior academic performance at a previously attended postsecondary institution. An MSEP student pays 150 percent of the institution's regular resident tuition ($7,200 for 30 credit hours in 2006-07). Candidates must have completed a minimum of 28 semester hours with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA by the end of the academic year or 14 hours by the end of the first semester in which they submit their admissions application.

All scholarships are renewable if students remain nonresidents of Nebraska, are enrolled full time during each semester of the academic year, successfully complete at least 24 credit hours (including at least nine graded hours) each semester with requisite grade-point averages.
