UNL awards transfer scholarships to 29

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has awarded scholarships to 29 students who will transfer from other institutions and begin classes at UNL Aug. 21. The scholarships include transfer Regents scholarships, $1,000 transfer scholarships and Phi Theta Kappa scholarships.
The transfer Regents Scholarship is awarded based on superior academics, demonstrated leadership, and involvement at the current institutions. Students must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and have completed a minimum of 45 credit hours at a Nebraska community college. The scholarship covers full tuition for four semesters, a value of approximately $9,600.
The $1,000 transfer scholarships are awarded based on superior academics, demonstrated leadership and involvement at previous institutions.
Phi Theta Kappa scholarships require a student to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the transfer student honorary, along with meeting the transfer scholarship criteria. Students must have a 3.5 grade point average or higher. Scholarships are also awarded based on an essay submitted by the students that highlight the students' goals, involvement on campus and involvement in the community. The value of this scholarship is $500.
Following is a list by hometown of transfer scholarship winners. Information includes previous institution and biographical information.
Albion: Alyssa Krueger, Nebraska Wesleyan University, $1,000 transfer scholarship. A psychology major at Nebraska Wesleyan, Krueger will transfer to UNL to pursue a degree in nutrition, health and fitness. She was an active member of Union Programs and Wesleyan Symphonic Band at NWU and a participant of the study-abroad program in Australia.
Bassett: Brian Munk, Northeast Community College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. At Northeast CC, Munk was vice president and president of the Horticulture Club. He was also a member of the North American Association of Colleges and Teachers in Agriculture. Munk is a graduate of Rock County High School.
Chapman: Jacob Van Pelt, University of Nebraska-Kearney, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Van Pelt was a psychology major at UNK, where he was a residential advisor for two years was is a member of the Psychology Club, Criminal Justice Club and National Scholars Honors Society. He was also a rush chair for Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In addition, he has been involved in a wide array of community fundraisers for the Red Cross, Special Olympics and many other projects.
Columbus: Kyle Bogus, Central Community College-Columbus, Regents. At Central CC-Columbus, Bogus was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and was a community volunteer, notably as a tutor. Bogus, who plans to study meteorology, is a graduate of Scotus Central Catholic High School.
Crete: Stacey Vlasin, Southeast Community College-Beatrice, Regents. At SCC-Beatrice, Vlasin held the offices of president, secretary and treasurer of the Ag Club and vice president and secretary of the Horticulture Club. She was a charter member and co-president of the Rotaract chapter, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and graduated with high distiction.
Fremont: Valerie Decker, Hillsborough (Fla.) Community College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Decker served in the U.S. Army the last four years, where she has developed a strong sense of responsibility and a passion for helping others. After military service she said she wants to continue her education to be better prepared to serve her country.
Fremont: Mitchell Schlieker, University of Nebraska at Omaha, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Schlieker was a member of the UNO Honors Program and an active member of his church community, where he assists with the Bible School and the Bible Camp. He plans to enroll in the mechanical engineering program at UNL.
Fullerton: Stephanie DeLancey, Iowa Western Community College-Council Bluffs, $1,000 transfer scholarship. At Iowa Western, DeLancey was the vice president of fellowship in Phi Theta Kappa. She was also a Student Ambassador, student tutor and student Mentor. She volunteered with Poetry Slam, an organization involving middle school students, and Highway Clean-up. DeLancey is a graduate of Fullerton High School.
Gering: Adam Kocer, Western Nebraska Community College, Regents. At Western Nebraska CC, Kocer earned his associate's degree in business administration while serving as a peer tutor and a supplemental instruction leader. He was also a student ambassador and orientation leader and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Kocer is a graduate of Gering High School.
Gering: Jessica Propp, Western Nebraska Community College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. At Western Nebraska CC, Propp was a Student Ambassador, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and a supplemental instruction leader. Propp is a graduate of Gering High School.
Hallam: Sandra "Sandy" Pospisil, Southeast Community College-Lincoln, Regents. A graduate of Dorchester High School, Sandy was a member and treasurer of Phi Theta Kappa. She is mother of two children and works for Crete Public Schools. Her goal is to become a high school math teacher.
Harvard: Amber Tobler, Central Community College-Hastings, Regents. At Central CC-Hastings, Tobler was a member and vice president of Phi Theta Kappa. She was involved in politics by organizing a debate and encouraging students to vote in the "Rock the Vote" campaign. She also volunteers for the American Red Cross. Tobler is a graduate of Harvard High School.
Hoskins: Melissa Heberer, Northeast Community College, Regents. At Northeast CC, Heberer was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and a Student Ambassador for the college. She is a graduate of Winside High School.
Leigh: Erica Ehlers, Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Ehlers was in the Safari Club and president of the Students of Technical Veterinary Medicine Association. Erica was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and earned a spot on the Dean's List. She plans to earn her state license to be a Veterinary Technician while she completes her studies at UNL. Ehlers is a graduate of Leigh High School.
Lincoln: Katie Quintero, Southeast Community College-Lincoln, Phi Theta Kappa. Quintero has continuosly volunteered for various politicians and at the Lincoln Food Pantry and volunteers with the Teens Encounter Christ program in Lincoln as well. Quintero was on the Dean's List at SCC-Lincoln.
McCook: Derick Lorentz, Colby (Kan.) Community College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Lorentz has been the public relations officer and the president of Phi Beta Lambda and is a certified tutor at the Comprehensive Learning Center. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Campus Crusade for Christ. Lorentz is a graduate of McCook High School.
Nenzel: Brent Nollette, Northeast Community College, Regents. At Northeast CC, Nollette was the first chair trumpet in the Northeast Jazz Machine a member of the college livestock judging team, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He is competing to be on the All-Academic team for community college students. Nollette is a graduate of Cody-Kilgore High School.
North Platte: Jake Fisher, Mid-Plains Community College, Regents. at Mid-Plains CC, Fisher was a presidential student leader and chief marketing officer for the women's softball team. He was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and volunteered his time as a student tutor and with the Clean City Committee. Fisher is a graduate of North Platte High School.
Oberlin, Kan.: Amber Reynolds-Lorentz, Colby Community College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. At Colby, Reynolds-Lorentz was a Presidential Scholar and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She was also the public relations officer for Phi Beta Lambda and a certified student tutor on campus. Her academic awards include the National Dean's List, National Collegiate Physical Science Award, and the Collegiate All-American Scholar Award. Reynolds-Lorentz is a graduate of Oberlin-Decatur Community High School.
Omaha: Suzan Necla Kumru, Metro Community College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. At Metro CC, Kumru was consistently on the Dean's List and was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma national honor societies. She plans to pursue a degree in interior design and wants to establish a local charter of the American Society of Interior Designers. She participated in a tour of Europe with the Nebraska Ambassadors of Music. Kumru graduated from Ralston High School with high honors.
Omaha: Nicholas Milledge, University of Nebraska at Omaha, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Milledge was consistently on the Dean's List and Chancellors List at UNO, where he was a member of the College Republicans. He plans to pursue an accounting degree at UNL.
Omaha: Aleksandar Sudar, Minnesota West Community and Technical College, $1,000 transfer scholarship. At Minnesota West, Sudar was consistently on the Dean's List and was a recipient of the Moody Academic Scholarship, which takes into account leadership qualities and academics. He tutors chemistry and calculus and coaches soccer at the elementary grade level. He also played on the intercollegiate basketball team.
Plainview: Jillian Goetz, Northeast Community College, Regents. At Northeast CC, Goetz was editor-in-chief of the college newspaper, a member of Phi Theta Kappa and secretary of the Student Ambassadors. A graduate of Plainview High School, she recently earned her American FFA degree.
Pleasant Dale: Thomas Aden, Southeast Community College-Lincoln, Phi Theta Kappa. Aden, who graduated with honors from SCC-Lincoln, was on the Dean's List each quarter and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. His is a graduate of Milford High School.
Ravenna: Nathan Ritz, University of Nebraska-Kearney, $1,000 transfer scholarship. He was a member of the honors society Phi Eta Sigma and a community service organization Circle K at UNK. In high school, he received the Excellence in Youth Award from the Kearney Hub, LouPlatte Academic All-Conference (ACT scores), and Academic All-State in cross-country and track.
Scottsbluff: Jason Flammang, Western Nebraska Community College, Regents. At Western Nebraska CC, Flammang was on the Dean's List, President's List and National Deans' List. He was an AWANA youth leader and involved in the Western Nebraska Community College Theatre. Flammang is a graduate of Scottsbluff High School.
Seward: Courtney Schaefer, Southeast Community College-Lincoln, Regents. At SCC-Lincoln, Schaefer was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She also represented the Early Childhood Education Program, promoting it and volunteering at events the program sponsored. She was a member and served as president, secretary and historian of the SCC chapter of of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. In She also participated in the "adopt-a-family" Christmas program.
Stuart: Heather Mitchell, Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, $1,000 transfer scholarship. Mitchell was a Student Ambassador, and president of Phi Theta Kappa. She was also president of the Student Technicians of Veterinary Medicine Association, and a member of the collegiate FFA chapter and the livestock judging team. Mitchell is a graduate of West Holt High School.
Wakefield: Maria Fernanda Joya, Northeast Community College, Regents. A native of Honduras who moved to the United States in 2006, Joya was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Criminal Justice Club at Northeast CC. She is a volunteer for the Salvation Army, where she helps serve and prepare food for the needy. She is also a volunteer for Adult Basic Education and the High School Equivalency Program. Joya is a graduate of Wakefield High School.
