UNL's McCoy wins regional Emmy, two SPJ awards

Barney McCoy, associate professor of broadcasting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, won a 2006 Emmy Award from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences this summer at the 42nd Annual Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards ceremony.

The Emmy was in the politics/government-news category. The piece was titled "Hazardous Hydrants" and produced while he was at WBNS-TV Cincinnati. McCoy was also nominated for an Emmy this year in the reporter and investigative reporting categories.

The Ohio Valley chapter of NATAS represents television professionals in 13 markets and four states: Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.

McCoy also won two first-place awards from the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, the in the television and best of show (TV) category.

The television award was for best coverage of the environment, "C8 and the Ohio EPA." The prize is awarded to the TV report that best served to improve the environment, either by pointing out a trouble spot or otherwise spotlighting an ecological topic.

The best of show (TV) award was in the best defense of the First Amendment, "Open Records Action Taken for Reporting on 'Alarming Absence: Columbus Fire Inspectors.'" The prize may go to an actual aired story or editorial, or a legal action pursued by a news organization.
