The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally community at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will celebrate GLBTA History Month throughout October with a variety of events across campus.
The opening ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. Sept. 29 in the Union Square of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St., with a proclamation by Lincoln Mayor Colleen Seng. During the ceremony, Father Don Hanway will read passages from his recently published book "Love Letter to the Church."
GLBTA History Month events include a presentation Oct. 10 in the Nebraska Union by Sue Rankin, research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education and assistant professor of education in the College Student Affairs Program at Pennsylvania State University. Other events include special showings of films at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the fourth annual GLBTA History Month dinner Oct. 26. A complete calendar of events is available at http://si.unl.edu/glbta/events.php.
GLBTA History Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of the GLTBA community. Pat Tetreault, assistant director of Student Involvement for GLBTA programs, said she welcomes everyone to the opening ceremony and the events that follow during the duration of the month. "General community and allies are really encouraged to attend these events to learn about GLBT history and to get to know the GLBT community," Tetreault said.
