WHERE: Unitarian Church, 6300 A Street
The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will offer a design and idea generation workshop Nov. 9-10 at the Unitarian Church, 6300 A St. in Lincoln.
Visiting artist Mary Anne Wise will conduct the workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Participants will learn the elements that characterize a recognizable style and learn techniques to discover their own style over time. The focus of the workshop is on the process, not a product. Slide lectures illustrate key points followed by object lessons to refine awareness of what Wise refers to as "visual vocabulary." Participants will juggle and mix their own vocabulary of images, icons and patterns to learn techniques that can be applied to making work in a series or charting a new course of imagery.
Wise said the class is geared to rug hookers, but is applicable to any two-dimensional, image-based media. Wise has been a full-time textile artist for 25 years and has lived in Wisconsin since 1986. Her rugs are in numerous corporate and private collections. She divides her time between rug hooking and rug weaving, designing rugs for the import industry, teaching and lecturing.
This workshop is in conjunction with an exhibition titled "Flower Powered: Hooked Rugs by Lulu Myers" at the Hillestad Gallery Nov. 6-Dec. 8. Myers (1881-1977), of Polk, Neb., hooked rugs for the last 10 years of her life, each one with an original design. This exhibition, curated by Mary Logue, is culled from the collections of Myers' granddaughters and other family members and friends.
Related activities with Wise include a lecture, "Custom Artisan Business Practices," from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 8, and two lectures at 1 p.m. Nov. 12 as part of opening reception events for the "Flower Powered" exhibition. The Nov. 12 lectures are "Contemporary Rug Hooking and Tufting in America" by Wise, and "Poinsettias and Padulas" by Logue. All lectures will be in Room 11 of the Home Economics Building, north of 35th Street and East Campus Loop.
