Francisco Souto, assistant professor of art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, received honorable mention in seventh Triennale de Chamalieres Mondial de l'Estampe et de la Gravure Originale, one of the most prestigious print triennials for small format in the world.

The triennial was hosted by the Association Movement Art Contemporain of Chamalieres, France. Participation was by invitation only. The competition had 2,165 prints from 434 artists from 117 countries. Only seven awards were given.

As part of the award, Souto will have a solo exhibition of his prints in Chamalieres, during the next triennial edition in 2009.

"The whole thing took me by surprise," Souto said. "It's quite a prestigious recognition for UNL to have both printmaking faculty recognized in this important international venue."

Karen Kunc, Cather professor of art at UNL, won second place in the last triennial in 2003 and was in France for her solo exhibition during the awards announcement.

Souto was born in Venezuela, and received his B.F.A. from the Herron School of Art at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2000, and his M.F.A. from Ohio State University in 2002.

He has participated in a wide range of national and international exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, Venezuela, Russia, Egypt and Japan. Souto has taught workshops and has been a visiting artist in the United States and abroad, including Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado; the Universidad de los Andes in Venezuela; American University in Cairo, Egypt; and the University of Texas-Austin.
