Lincoln, Neb., December 8th, 2006 —

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln celebrated the diverse talents of nearly 400 Omaha-area high school senior students of color at its fourth-annual Achievement Banquet Nov. 19 at the Hilton Hotel. Honored students were nominated by teachers, guidance counselors and community leaders for their achievement in the classroom, commitment to community service or leadership development.

The banquet featured a keynot address by UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman. Bianca Humm, a 2004-05 Nebraska Achievement honoree and a Bellevue West graduate, also spoke to the students. Juan Franco, vice chancellor for student affairs at UNL, served as master of ceremonies.

UNL has seen increases in both the diversity and the academic preparation of its last two freshman classes. The fall 2006 minority freshman class had a 16 percent increase and comprised nearly 12 percent of the entire freshmen class. The fall 2006 freshman class was not only the most diverse but also the most academically talented in the history of the university.
