Erika Navarrete, a master of fine arts candidate in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Art and Art History, has been selected as a fellow of the 2006-07 Hispanic Scholarship Fund/McNamara Family Creative Arts Project Grant. She will receive a grant of more than $5,300 to assist her in completing her arts project.

A native of Visalia, Calif., Navarrete proposed to create approximately 25 drawings and paintings on paper, birch plywood or canvas within a year or less for exhibitions and other opportunities. She will also participate in the 2007 Southern Graphics Council alumni printmaking portfolio. Using the process of lithography, she will print an edition of 23 for the portfolio exchange, which will be on view at the Kansas City Art Institute during the conference in March. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund grant is a materials/equipment grant for her materials to create these art works.

Navarrete, who is also the recipient of a Larson Fellowship at UNL, said she was in disbelief when she received the e-mail notifying her she had received the Hispanic Scholarship Fund grant.

"Let's just say I read it several times and inspected the e-mail to make sure it wasn't spam," she said. "I was in disbelief and very excited since I really wasn't expecting to receive this grant. I am really looking forward to the possibilities and opportunities this grant will allow me to experience in the coming year."

Navarrete received her bachelor of fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2003.

Her recent exhibitions include the third annual Juried Artist Members Exhibition and New Visual Voices: UNL MFA Students at the Haydon Art Center in Lincoln, the Emerging Artists Showcase at Kiechel Fine Art in Lincoln, and Code Red at Peru State College, all in 2006.

She is a member of Visual Artists in Practice, a UNL organization for MFA graduate students, and is a student artist board member and volunteer at the Haydon Art Center.
