Lincoln, Neb., January 22nd, 2007 —

Fourteen student-run sport clubs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will have open tryouts for admitted high school seniors on Feb. 18 and March 22. Students selected at the open tryouts will be added to club rosters and will begin practicing during their first term at the university.

Sport clubs holding open tryouts Feb. 18 are crew, cycling, handball, men's ice hockey, men's rugby, women's rugby, men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball. The sport clubs holding tryouts March 22 include baseball, men's bowling, crew, cycling, handball, men's ice hockey, women's ice hockey, women's rugby, women's soccer, tennis and women's volleyball. All tryouts will begin at the Campus Recreation Center at 14th and Vine streets on the UNL City Campus.

Sport clubs at UNL are student-run programs that compete regionally against other colleges and universities, including other sport clubs from other Big 12 Conference universities and some varsity teams from regional institutions such as Creighton University, Dana College and Doane College. Participation in sport clubs is on a non-scholarship basis and involves some costs such as equipment and travel. Sport clubs are comprised of students who desire to compete or participate in a sport throughout their college career. Many sport clubs are created because the talent, dedication to the sport and interest demand an opportunity for students other than varsity athletics, or because no varsity team exists.

Currently enrolled UNL students can learn about joining a sports club by contacting UNL Campus Recreation at (402) 472-3467 for a club representative's contact information.

High school seniors admitted to UNL can register for tryouts online at www.admissions.unl.edu/tryouts. In addition to the open tryouts this spring, some sport clubs will hold tryouts in the fall if additional team members are needed.
