A new art quilt exhibition at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln celebrates the teacher and student relationship among quilt artists. "Give and Take: The Artist/Student Dialogue," organized by UNL's International Quilt Study Center, is part of the center's biennial symposium and will run through March 2.

The work of professional quilt artists is paired with work of their students. This national exhibition recognizes the contribution of Quilt Surface Design Symposium of Columbus, Ohio, and its successful educational programs for non-traditional quilters. All artists featured in "Give and Take" have been instructors, students, or both at the symposium.

Several of these artists' works are included in the permanent collection of the International Quilt Study Center.

The Hillestad Gallery ( http://textilegallery.unl.edu) is part of the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design at UNL and is located on the second floor of the Home Economics Building, north of 35th street and East Campus Loop. The gallery is open to the public without charge Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and weekends by special request. Call (402) 472-2911, to request weekend opening. It is closed university holidays and between shows. For hours, directions and further information about the International Quilt Study Center, call (402) 472-6549 or visit its Web site (www.quiltstudy.org).

A lecture, "Quilt Surface Design Symposium: Incubating the Innovative Quilt" will be presented by Michael James, UNL professor of textiles, clothing and design, at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Home Economics Building. A reception will follow and the gallery will be open to view the work. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

"Give and Take" coincides with the International Quilt Study Center's scholarly symposium, "Traditions and Trajectories: Education and the Quiltmaker," March 1-3. Full information is available on the center's Web site.
