The annual Nebraska Economics Challenge state championship on March 31 will pit high school teams from across the state in a competition to determine who has the greater knowledge of economics.
Following a qualifying online round of testing, the top 10 teams of students in Nebraska will travel to Lincoln to unseat the defending state champs from 2006, Norris and McCook high schools. Competing schools include Ashland-Greenwood, Bellevue East, Centennial, Lincoln Northeast, Millard North, Norris, Omaha Central, Omaha Creighton Prep and Waverly.
Teams will compete in one of two divisions for four rounds. The first three rounds focus on the broad range of economics issues from an international and national view to individual decision-making behavior. Following the first three rounds, the top two team scores in each division will advance to a fast-paced quiz bowl to determine the two winning teams.
The two state champion teams will advance to the regional competition in Minneapolis on April 22. The winning team from the Regional Economics Challenge competition will compete in the National Economics Challenge in New York City.
The event is hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Center for Economic Education and is sponsored by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the economic literacy of Nebraska's students, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City-Omaha Branch, the National Council on Economic Education, and Goldman Sachs. The goal of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education (www.nebraskacouncil.org) is achieved through economic education programs, courses and workshops for educators across the state.
