WHERE: Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, 12th and R Streets

Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has initiated a new program, "Sheldon Connections," which aims to transform the museum's exhibition spaces on the north side of the second floor into a dynamic public site from July 13 through Oct. 14.
Sheldon is soliciting and considering applications for project ideas that are designed to be participatory, experimental and flexible. One of the goals of the program is to entice new audiences, such as young adults and those of college age, and enhance the experiences of the regular Sheldon audience. The spaces are intended to include events, activities and exhibitions such as slide jams, performances, critiques, and classes that are limited only by participant imaginations. A gathering space with comfortable seating and a beverage service are under consideration.
Rita Hermann, who coordinates the program with the help of a steering committee, said, "Sheldon Connections was envisioned as an opportunity, provided by needed building improvements, to share the museum as a resource in new ways. The initiative is an invitation to the community. The steering committee, Sheldon staff and I are intent on structuring an experimental process where we offer the institution of Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery to those who make application with projects that explore the use of this space in innovative ways."
She added that the title helps explain the program's main goal -- connections -- between Sheldon, spectators and participants, to establish new relationships and expand existing ones.
"This is a call for all of us to use our imaginations -- in an exploration of artistic and educational ideas -- to design vibrant displays and projects. It's a chance to participate, in some capacity, in the widely diverse processes of art-making," she said.
Individuals and organizations that wish to propose a project, experiment or idea will find application guidelines online at www.sheldon.unl.edu under Sheldon Connections. For more information, contact Rita Hermann at (402) 472-2461 or rhermann3@unl.edu.
Informal informational sessions about the program are planned during a study/hangout opportunity at Sheldon in the Great Hall from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 28 and noon to 5 p.m. April 29 -- the weekend before final examinations at UNL. Steering committee members and Hermann will be available to help answer questions. Review of applications will begin May 1 and will continue until spots are filled.
As events are scheduled, they will be advertised locally and posted on the Sheldon Web site.
The Nebraska Art Association, Sheldon's dedicated nonprofit support group, sponsors this initiative while the museum is undergoing significant exterior renovations.
Sheldon houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects focusing on American art. The museum, located at 12th and R streets on the UNL campus, is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For information or to arrange a tour, call (402) 472-2461.
