The Nebraska Alumni Association will present its Alumni Family Tree Award to the family of Herb "Cub" Potter Sr., who played quarterback on the dominating "Stiehm Rollers" Nebraska football teams of 1911, 1912 and 1914. The award will be presented during the All-University Celebration and Salute to Alumni Achievement at the Nebraska Champions Club May 4.
The Alumni Family Tree Award honors a family who has a tradition of attending the University of Nebraska. The recipient family must include a minimum of three generations of graduates. At least two of the family members must have records of outstanding service to the university, the alumni association, their community or their profession.
The Potter family boasts four generations of UNL graduates -- at least one in every decade since 1910 -- beginning with Herb Potter Sr. The sons of Herb and his wife, Carrie -- Herb Jr., '43, and Brooks -- continued the family tradition of attending the university. Brooks died in World War II, but Herb Jr. returned to campus in 1953 as assistant director of the NU Foundation, retiring in 1982 as vice president and treasurer and moving to California, where he served as historian for the Bay Area Nebraska Alumni Chapter. He and his wife, Lois Ballantyne, '40, passed the university tradition to their daughters, Barbara, '67, and Carol, '73, '75. In addition, their sons-in-law and 12 cousins, nieces and nephews are graduates, including current NU marching band member Kyle Peter.
Reservations for the All-University Celebration and Salute to Alumni Achievement may be made by calling the Nebraska Alumni Association, (888) 353-1874 or (402) 472-4250. The cost is $25 per person and the deadline for registrations is April 27.
Nebraska Alumni Association programs are developed in support of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and funded by member dues and corporate partnerships. The Nebraska Alumni Association is an independent organization that receives no state or tuition dollars.
