Lincoln, Neb., April 19th, 2007 —

The Nebraska Alumni Association will present leadership awards to three outstanding UNL students May 4 during the All-University Celebration and Salute to Alumni Achievement at the Nebraska Champions Club.

The Shane Osborn Award, named after the 1996 NU graduate and Navy lieutenant, goes to Christopher Russell, a senior in criminal justice from Burke, Va. Candy Alexander, a senior in psychology from Omaha, is the recipient of the Vann Leadership Award, established by the late Howard Vann and his wife Judy. The Roy and Catherine Yaley Student Leadership Award, named in memory of a former alumni association president and his wife by their daughters, will be presented to Elizabeth Bowhay, a senior in speech-language pathology from Lincoln.

Russell is a member of the Air Force ROTC at UNL and serves as deputy national commander of Pershing Rifles, creating inspection guidelines for all of the group's 50 companies and regiments across the country. He also volunteers for Memorial Stadium cleanup and security and has served at several POW/MIA activities to promote awareness.

Alexander chaired the planning committee, overseeing the activities of all of the committees for the 2007 Big XII Conference on Black Student Government hosted by UNL. As a psychology major, she is also pursuing a scientific track so that she can attend graduate school in clinical psychology or medical school to become a psychiatrist.

Bowhay is a four-year member of the Scarlet and Cream Singers. She is also involved in Chi Omega sorority, Student Alumni Association, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Pi Lambda Beta Honors Society and is the president of the Nebraska Student Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
