The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced the awarding this spring of 2,499 scholarships to Nebraska high school seniors.

The awards were made to 2,209 individuals from 264 high schools, plus 12 who are home-schooled. These awards are in addition to 815 scholarships announced in the fall. The spring awards include 538 Regents Scholarships (including 150 Nebraska Top Scholars), 146 Nebraska Achievement Scholarships, 160 David Distinguished Scholarships, 1,347 James H. Canfield Scholarships, 94 Chancellor's Leadership Class awards and 63 Pepsi Scholarships for Outstanding Volunteer Service and Leadership.

The total potential value of the scholarships awarded this year is more than $22 million.

Regents Scholarships are among the most prestigious awards granted by the university. They pay tuition for full-time students (equivalent to a cash value of more than $22,000 over four years) and are renewable for up to 135 credit hours or completion of a bachelor's degree provided eligibility requirements are met. The scholarships are awarded based on the student's sixth-semester high school class rank and ACT or SAT composite score.

The students who were selected as Nebraska Top Scholars will receive at least $1,500 per year in additional scholarship awards from the university or the University of Nebraska Foundation, provided they meet renewal criteria each year.

Nebraska Achievement Scholarships are based on academic achievement, admission test scores, information in the student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid and the university's commitment to enroll a diverse student body. Six of the scholarships were for tuition with the other 10 offering $1,000 per year. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years provided continuing eligibility conditions are met.

David Distinguished Scholar Awards offer full-time students $1,000 annually for up to four years if they meet the same renewal requirements as with Regents Scholarships. David Distinguished Scholarships are funded from a trust established in 1973 by the late Adrian H. David, a former Minneapolis attorney, in honor of his parents. Adrian David was a 1908 graduate of the NU College of Law. The trust also funds faculty research projects, placing a special emphasis on cancer research.

Members of the Chancellor's Leadership Class are awarded one-year scholarships of $1,000. The award was created to recognize and reward students who have excelled both academically and in leadership roles in school and community activities. Members must be full-time students and participate in scheduled Chancellor's Leadership Class activities.

Pepsi Scholarships are one-year, $1,000 scholarships to full-time students who participate in scheduled weekly leadership development seminars that focus on volunteer service. The award recognizes students who understand the importance of volunteerism and have demonstrated leadership and dedication in working to improve their communities.

An individual student can qualify for one Regents, Nebraska Achievement, David Distinguished or Canfield scholarship. Honors Program Textbook, Pepsi and Chancellor's Leadership Class scholarships may be combined with other awards.
