The juried exhibition, "Small Expressions 2007," sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America Inc., is on exhibition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery through June 22.

Sandra Bowles, executive director and editor of Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot, will speak at the closing reception June 20 in Room 11 of the Home Economics Building on 35th Street north of East Campus Loop. Her talk begins at 7:30 p.m. and is titled "History Revealed in Small Forms." The lecture and exhibition are free and open to the public.

This annual exhibition of small-scale works is limited to fiber techniques such as weaving, spinning, basketry, felting, beading and papermaking. Finished pieces may not exceed 15 inches in any direction, including any and all mounting or display devices. Wendy Weiss, director of the Hillestad Gallery and professor in UNL Textiles, Clothing and Design, was the juror.

Weiss said artists "explored nature, narrative, the figure and non-objective form. Thirteen objects are sculptural, ranging from basketry to felt, beadwork to mixed media. Eleven are woven, in double weave, tapestry, wedge weave. Stitching in a whole variety of techniques and imagery represent the balance of the pieces in the show."

The show travels to the Indianapolis Art Center July 27-Sept. 9. The local hosts for the show are the 2007 Midwest Weavers Conference and Spinners and Weavers of Indiana Fibers and Textiles.

The Omaha Weavers and Spinner Guild was instrumental in bringing this exhibition to Nebraska, under the leadership of Mary Zicafoose, board member of the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery and the guild. The Friends of the Gallery are underwriting the cost of mounting "Small Expressions 2007."

The Hillestad Gallery, on the second floor of the Home Economics Building, 35th Street north of East Campus Loop, is open to the public 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call (402) 472-2911 or visit http://textilegallery.unl.edu for more information.
