Panel to discuss what the public should know about bridges

In light of the Aug. 1 collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Civil Engineering will host a seminar on bridge engineering Aug. 8.
"The Layperson's Guide to Bridge Engineering" will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. The event is free and open to the public.
UNL researchers, industry contractors and representatives from the Nebraska Department of Roads will explain the basics of designing, building and maintaining steel and concrete bridges. Presenters will share objective information about the laws and principles of bridge design and construction in Nebraska and elsewhere.
The seminar also will include discussion of possible explanations for the I-35W bridge collapse and provide information about the characteristics of Nebraska bridges.
