Activities at UNL mark second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

Lincoln, Neb., August 31st, 2007 —

The Office of Academic Support and Intercultural Services at the Culture Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is coordinating "Hurricane Katrina: A Remembrance in Three Acts," a three-day event on Sept. 5, 6, and 25. All events are free and open to the public.

UNL has been involved in fund-raising for Katrina survivors since shortly after the Hurricane struck New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. In October 2005, the campus hosted a fund raiser, "The Kindness of Strangers," an and in 2006 organized a conference and fund raiser, "After the Storm: Hurricane Katrina, A One-Year Retrospective."

This year's activities include the screening and discussion of Spike Lee's award-winning documentary, a discussion of the implications Hurricane Katrina presents in this season of electoral politics, and a performance by the Caribbean/New Orleans-style band Executive Steel.

A schedule of events follows:

Wednesday, Sept. 5: 6 p.m., screening and discussion of Acts I and II of Spike Lee's award-winning HBO documentary, "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts."

Thursday, Sept. 6: 6 p.m., screening and discussion of Acts III and IV of "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts."

Tuesday, Sept. 25: 6 p.m., "An OASIS Coffee House"

6 p.m., Keynote Address by Byron D. Orey, "Race and Politics in the Big Easy: Post Katrina"

7 p.m., Panel and Community Discussion: "After the Storm: UNL's Voices of Katrina"

8 p.m., The Executive Steel Band
