UNL parents to converge on campus for annual parents weekend Oct. 5-7

Lincoln, Neb., September 20th, 2007 —

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Parents Association in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and UNL Housing will host the 2007 UNL Parents Weekend on Oct. 5-7. Parents of all freshman and new transfer students are welcome register to attend with their student. The weekend is an opportunity for parents and students to spend time together and to learn more about the UNL experience.

Activities scheduled include tours of campus facilities where well-known faculty will give presentations, including:

- College of Journalism and Mass Communications faculty who helped students produce a depth-reporting documentary and magazine about Germany (Andersen Hall)

- Exhibit and Behind the Scenes Tour of Great Plains Art Museum, hosted by Amber Mohr, curator (Hewit Center)

- "Storm chasing with students as a research and public service activity" by climatology professor Ken Dewey (Nebraska Union)

- "Making NASCAR SAFER" by racecar crash barrier developer engineer Dean Sicking (Walter Scott Building).

Parents may also choose to tour an apartment-style residence hall and a dining service area with University Housing and tour Memorial Stadium and have their picture taken on the football field. Entertainment during the weekend will include a performance by the Scarlet and Cream Singers and skits by the New Student Enrollment. Parents and students will have a choice of movies at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, an opportunity to use the Campus Recreation facilities throughout the weekend, and a chance to enjoy root beer floats from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. This year parents and students will also be able to attend sessions on "Campus Safety" by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, UNL Police Services, and the Lincoln Police Department, "Financial Management" by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, the Student Accounts/Bursar's Office and the UNL Credit Union; and "College to Career" by the Office of Undergraduate Studies and Career Services.
