Management Development Seminars set for Lincoln, Omaha, Mahoney

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Management will offer four seminars in the next month covering a wide range of topics in its fall Management Development Certificate Program.
The seminars will be conducted in Lincoln, Omaha and Mahoney State Park. They will be led by UNL faculty and professionals recognized locally, nationally and internationally, and will offer participants the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge, increase their productivity and that of their staff, and gain tools and techniques to help them reach their goals.
The Management Certificate Program has three levels: Basic Management Certificates for newly promoted managers and supervisors and those who want to prepare themselves for management positions; Advanced Management Certificates for managers with five or more years of experience and managers who want to focus on specialized areas of management; and Executive Management Certificates for managers with 10 or more years of experience at the middle to executive level and those who want to continue their management training by staying in touch with today's business world. Enrollment in the Management Certificate Program is not a requirement for participating in the seminars.
The seminars will be conducted at Gallup University, 1001 Gallup Drive, Omaha; Ferguson Center, 700 S. 16th St., Lincoln; and Peter Kiewit Lodge, Mahoney State Park, off Interstate 80 Exit 426.

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Gallup University -- "Role of the Modern Manager: Understanding, Predicting and Controlling Human Behavior," led by Steve Farner, associate professor in the College of Business at Bellevue University. Farner will explore the concept of human motivation by looking into the human mind to see "what makes us do what we do." Registration deadline is Oct. 17.
Thursday, Oct. 25, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., Mahoney State Park -- "Know Your Rights; Protect Your Organization," led by Mark Fahleson, a practicing attorney and professor at the University of Nebraska College of Law. This two-part seminar will provide the latest information on employment law. Fahleson will use recent court cases to explain employment law in Nebraska and the nation. Registration deadline is Oct. 18.
Wednesday, Oct. 31, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Ferguson Center -- "Organizational Communication," led by Tom O'Connor, founding director of the E.J. Faulkner Writing and Speaking Lab in the UNL College of Business Administration. O'Connor will demonstrate how good communication skills contribute to personal and team success, discuss strategies for improving speaking, writing and listening abilities and show participants how to analyze their own communication behaviors. Registration deadline is Oct. 24.
Wednesday, Nov. 7, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Ferguson Center -- "Managing Conflict," led by Farner, who will introduce participants to some of the conflict principles relevant to organizations and teach some techniques on how to solve them. Registration deadline is Oct. 31.
Thursday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., Mahoney State Park -- "Starting and Owning a Business: Legal and Tax Issues, Parts 1 and 2," led by Todd Blome, CPA, partner with BMG Certified Public Accountants LLP in Lincoln, and Andrew Loudon, partner with the Baylor, Evnen, Curtiss & Witt LLP law firm in Lincoln. This two-part seminar is designed to assist those contemplating starting a business by providing insight about the business start-up process, including how to make good start-up decisions that will have a lasting, positive effect on their business.
