Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers study series on Mari Sandoz

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will offer a six-week study series titled "Mari Sandoz: Story Catcher of the High Plains," Nov. 2 through Dec. 14 at Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, 1800 N. 33rd St.
The six sessions will focus on the life, literature and legacy of Sandoz and the people she wrote about: the Native Americans, the homesteaders, the cowboys, the ranchers, cattlemen, buffalo hunters and adventurers.
Session titles and presenters are: "Mari Sandoz: A Personal Reminiscence," presented by biographer Ron Hull; "Sex and Settlement in the Narratives of Mari Sandoz," referencing Sandoz's work in "Old Jules" and "Slogum House" by Matthew Evertson, professor of English at Chadron State College; "Sandoz, Neihardt and Crazy Horse," by Helen Winter Stauffer, emeritus professor of English at the University of Nebraska at Kearney; "The Kinds of Writing in the Sandoz Canon," a review of the kinds of writing in the Sandoz canon and an account of her professional relationships with prominent folklorists, by Michael Cartwright, professor of English at Chadron State; "The History, Culture and Spirituality of the Lakota Sioux," by Phyllis Stone, a Sicangu Lakota from the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota; and "Mari Sandoz as Indian Historian" by John Wunder, professor of history and journalism and mass communications at UNL.
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a collaboration between the Bernard Osher Foundation and the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences. It provides access to intellectually and culturally stimulating programs for adults ages 50 and above throughout the year. It is one of a national network of institutes creating programs for lifelong learners at 73 universities and colleges across the country.
