A diverse set of internationally known artists are exhibiting printed, dyed, embellished and altered fabrics in "Unfurled: Expressive Cloth" at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery through Nov. 23.
This exhibit showcases traditional and experimental dye techniques used by artists to explore timeless themes. Participating artists include: Ilze Aviks, Els van Baarle, Laura Beehler, Claire Benn, Karren Brito, Jane Dunnewold, Catharine Ellis, Elin Noble, Sherri Smith and Katherine Sylvan. This exhibition represents an important gathering of work by artists who share a passion for manipulating the fabric surface.
Curators Dunnewold and Wendy Weiss said they welcome this opportunity to feature artists who approach cloth from several perspectives and through a variety of processes and techniques. Some manipulate threads to create their image, while others engage in contemporary adaptations of resist methods used in cultures around the world. The exploration and adaptation of historic ethnic textile manipulation techniques, as well as themes, promise to give the fiber art world work that is fresh in style and rich in context.
The Hillestad Gallery, on the second floor of the Home Economics Building, 35th Street north of East Campus Loop, is open to the public 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call (402) 472-2911 or visit http://textilegallery.unl.edu for more information.
A reception and lecture are scheduled for Nov. 16 in Room 11 of the Home Economics Building. The reception is from 7-9 p.m., and the lecture, "Unfurling: Seeking Meaningful Expression" by Dunnewold, an internationally known artist and teacher, will begin at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition is supported by the Nebraska Humanities Council, the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, and the Textiles, Clothing and Design Department and the College of Education and Human Sciences at UNL.
