UNL honors top graduate students with fellowships

Twenty-four University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate students from a variety of disciplines were honored last month with some of UNL's most prestigious graduate fellowships.
The recipients represent only about 12 percent of fellowship applicants from more than 4,400 graduate students at UNL. They received medals and were recognized by Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Prem Paul, vice chancellor for research and dean of graduate studies, in an Oct. 17 ceremony at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
Fellowships awarded include:
* Othmer Fellowships to assist in recruiting exceptional scholars seeking a terminal degree. Recipients are awarded an assistantship at the highest level offered by their department, plus an additional $7,500 for three years, given continued excellent progress toward the degree.
* Fling Fellowships, which provide outstanding master's and doctoral students at any stage of their program of study a stipend of $20,000. Recipients accept the stipend in lieu of working so they can concentrate on academic work.
* Presidential Fellowships for outstanding doctoral students in the last year of their program. The fellowship a stipend of $24,000 with an agreement from the student not to work so he or she can concentrate on completion of their degree.
