Lincoln, Neb., February 25th, 2008 —

On March 4, Sharon Kennedy, curator at Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, will present a lecture and slideshow on the contributions of 12 women artists to Nebraska's early history. The presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. A brief reception will follow the lecture.

Kennedy began her research on Nebraska women artists as part of her master's thesis in museum studies with an emphasis in art history at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She detailed the lives and achievements of these artistic pioneers, who worked predominantly during the years 1880-1950. Her manuscript was published as a 33-page article in the fall 2007 issue of Nebraska History. She has also created a 4-minute podcast about her work available on the Sheldon Web site, www.sheldon.unl.edu.

Although mostly unknown, these skilled women left a large legacy in the state, helping to establish art organizations, developing art collections and assisting in the creation of art departments in colleges and universities throughout Nebraska. The artists included in this talk will be:

* Sarah Wool Moore (1846-1911)

* Cora Parker (1859-1944)

* Sarah Sewell Hayden (1862-1939)

* Elizabeth Tuttle Holsman (1873-1956)

* Alice Righter Edmiston (1874-1964)

* Angel Decora Dietz (1871-1919)

* Elizabeth Honor Dolan (1875-1948)

* Alice Cleaver (1870-1944)

* Gladys M. Lux (1899-2003)

* Katherine "Kady" Burnap Faulkner (1901-1977)
