Goldwater scholarships won by 3 UNL students

Three University of Nebraska-Lincoln students, Aaron Fluitt, Corey Georgesen and Robert Woodward, have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for 2008-09 from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Goldwater Scholars are selected based on academic merit, and 321 were awarded from a field of 1,035 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one- and two-year scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Goldwater Scholars have academic qualifications that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. The scholarships are awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States.

Fluitt is a sophomore from Lincoln and a graduate of Lincoln East High School. He majors in chemical engineering and will pursue a research career. Georgesen is a sophomore from Omaha who graduated from Creighton Preparatory School. Majoring in math and biochemistry, he plans to pursue an M.D. or a Ph.D. Woodward is a sophomore from Rochester, Minn., and graduated from Mayo High School. He majors in computer science and engineering and plans to pursue a career in research.
