Lincoln, Neb., May 23rd, 2008 —

Thirteen journalism students, one history student and one engineering student from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are studying in Germany this week and next. The class is part of the vision to position the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications as a collegiate leader in international study abroad.

Frauke Hachtmann, an advertising faculty member, and Julia Stumkat, a graduate teaching assistant, lead the class. Hachtmann is a native of Hannover, Germany, and has taught global advertising and international media at UNL for several years. Her research focuses on German-American relations and advertising practices. Stumkat is a native of Rostock, Germany.

Students will meet with journalists, advertising agencies, and a variety of media outlets in the creative heart of Germany that is Berlin. In addition, they'll visit Munich, the home of many of Germany's major film studios.

In addition to exploring issues Germany faces in a globalized world, students will learn about theories and communication models to help them understand and avoid cultural stereotypes while developing an appreciation for cultural differences.

During the two weeks, the students plan to post regular updates in the form of stories, photographs and audio clips on the College of Journalism and Mass Communications' NewsNetNebraska Web site (www.newsnetnebraska.org). The students will earn three course credits toward their degrees during UNL's pre-session May 19-June 2.
