'Films of the 1960s' theme of summer 'Movies on the Green' series

The stars will shine again on the University Of Nebraska-Lincoln campus when the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University Program Council unspool the annual Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection Movies on the Green 2008 series. The theme for this year's series is "Films of the 1960s."

The series is presented Thursdays July 10 through Aug. 14 with the support of and donations from the Lincoln Arts Council, the Rogers Foundation, Jerry Jensen, Kimball Hall, IATSE Local 151, Friends of the Ross, and US Bank. It is presented in conjunction with the exhibit "Peace, Love and Psychedelic Sixties," on display at the Sheldon Museum of Art through Aug. 3.

Lawn chair and blanket-toting patrons will also be able to enjoy movie classics including:

* July 10 -- Fred Zinnemann's "A Man for All Seasons." Solid cinematography and enjoyable performances from Paul Scofield and Robert Shaw add a spark to this deliberately paced adaptation of the Robert Bolt play.

* July 17 -- Franco Zeffirelli's "Taming of the Shrew," a vibrant adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play, featuring dynamic and ferocious performances by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

* July 24 -- The incredible special effects of the legendary Ray Harryhausen in "Jason and the Argonauts."

* July 31 -- The zany antics of "The Three Stooges in Orbit."

* Aug. 7 -- Paul Newman as a private investigator in "Harper," along with a stellar cast including Loren Bacall.

* Aug 14 -- The energetic and highly entertaining musical "Bye Bye Birdie," starring Janet Leigh and Dick Van Dyke.

All screenings are presented on the lawn north of Kimball Recital Hall, 11th and R streets. Screenings are free and open to the public and begin at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.). Popcorn and soda are sold at the screenings. Film commentary written by Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection donor Jerry Jensen will be distributed free of charge.
