UNL Computer Science and Engineering to celebrate 40th year

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Computer Science and Engineering is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its founding with a series of events Sept. 25-27 that highlight the development and accomplishments of the department.

Celebration events include:

Keynote address by Richard Sincovec, Coleman-Richardson Visiting Professor of Computer Science at the U.S. Air Force Academy, former chairman of computing departments at UNL and two other universities, former division director at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and former division and center director at NASA Ames Research Center, Thursday, Sept. 25, 4 p.m., Nebraska Union Auditorium

Tour of facilities, including the Research Computing Facility and the Jeffrey S. Raikes Honors Program in Computer Science and Management (formerly the J.D. Edwards Program), Friday, Sept. 26, 1 p.m., beginning at the new Schorr Center for Computer Science and Engineering

Lecture by Jeff Raikes, former president of the Microsoft Business Division, now CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Friday, Sept. 26, 2 p.m., Nebraska Union Auditorium

Talks by distinguished speakers Tom Seevers (IBM), Mark Tuttle (Intel), and Michael Sump (Retiree, Texas Instruments), Friday, Sept. 26, 3 p.m., Heritage Room, Nebraska Union

Formal dedication of the new Schorr Center for Computer Science and Engineering, 5 p.m.

Pre-game party before the Nebraska-Virginia Tech football game, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2 1/2 hours before kickoff at the June and Paul Schorr III Center for Computer Science and Engineering

A reception and celebration dinner at the Champions Club, with inauguration of the Nebraska Hall of Computing to recognize the outstanding industry and academic contributors to computing. There is no cost to attend the other events. The public, including students, faculty, professionals in the field, industry and government representatives are welcome.
