Great Plains Art Museum hosts 2 permanent collection exhibitions

"Prairie Fire:
"Circle of Life"

The Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present two exhibitions derived from the museum's permanent collection to complement a national traveling exhibit, "Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country," at UNL's Love Library Oct. 17-Dec. 4.

"Beyond Tradition: Contemporary American Indian Art" and "Faithful and Vivid: Native Encounters Surrounding the Lewis and Clark Expedition" run Nov. 4 through Dec. 14, at the museum, 1155 Q St.

"Beyond Tradition" focuses on Native American artists active in the past 50 years whose work expresses innovations while affirming the continuity of past and present. Artworks by Michael M. Chiago, Delbridge Honanie, Laurie Houseman-Whitehawk, Milland Lomakema, Daniel Long Soldier, Christine Musgrave, Bill Rabbit, Juane Quick-to-See Smith, Terence Talaswaima and Emilie Touraine are included.

"Faithful and Vivid" examines artist-accompanied encounters with Native Americans in the decades following the Lewis and Clark expedition. Artworks by Karl Bodmer, George Catlin, Felix Octavious Dorley, Edwin W. Deming, Frederic S. Remington, Charles M. Russell, Alfred Sully and Mohonri M. Young will be among the works shown.

Visitors are invited to a First Friday reception 5-7 p.m. Nov. 7.

The Great Plains Art Museum is open to the public 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:30-5 p.m. Sundays (closed Mondays, holiday weekends and between exhibitions). There is no admission charge.
