Educator, poet and advocate Lloyd Daniel will be the keynote speaker Jan. 19 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday.

Daniel will deliver "The Second Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." during the Chancellor's Program, beginning at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. The program will also include performances by the Afrikan Peoples Union choir and the presentation of the 13th-annual Chancellor's Fulfilling the Dream awards.

The Fulfilling the Dream awards are presented to individuals or groups who have contributed to the UNL community or the wider Lincoln community by their exemplary action in promoting the goals and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year's winners are the group Students United for Nebraska for the campus award and Peter Ferguson, vice president of Leadership Lincoln, for the Lincoln community award.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., and a former member of the Missouri House of Representatives, Daniel delivers an engaging and inspirational presentation that combines a thought-provoking lecture on politics, history, culture and economics with his unique brand of poetry and satire. His image and words have appeared in numerous media, including CNN, ABC, Newsweek, and the Call, the Globe and the Final Call newspapers. He's been on National Public Radio and on the National Black Radio Network.
