Management Development seminars scheduled Feb. 25-July 15

The Department of Management in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business Administration has announced its schedule of Management Development Certificate Program seminars for the spring and summer. Sessions begin Feb. 25 and continue through July 15.
In these interactive seminars, instructors bring cutting-edge theory to life and provide practical applications participants can put to work immediately. Topics for spring and summer seminars include three new seminars: "Leading in a Flat World: Leadership and Cultural Differences Within an Organization," led by Todd Weber, postdoctoral associate in the UNL Leadership Institute, Feb. 25; "Powerful Presentations," led by Joy Huber, an award-winning professional speaker and business communications specialist, April 15; and "Building an Ethical Workplace," led by Marie Mitchell, assistant professor of management at UNL, April 29.
The full schedule of seminars, their sites and instructors follow. All are 8:30-11:30 a.m., unless otherwise noted. Except May 7, seminars are held in Lincoln at the Ferguson Center, 700 S. 16th St.; in Omaha at Gallup University, 1001 Gallup Drive; or at Mahoney State Park, off Interstate 80 Exit 426.

* March 4 -- "Creating and Managing Teams," Ferguson Center, Dawn Braithwaite, professor of communications studies at UNL.
* March 11 -- "Enterprise Risk Management," Ferguson Center, David Olson, James and H.K. Stuart chancellor's distinguished chair and professor of management information systems at UNL.
* March 18 -- "Effective Planning," Gallup University, Sam Nelson, University of Nebraska doctoral candidate studying the areas of strategy, international business and entrepreneurship.
* March 25 -- "Issues in Diversity," Ferguson Center, Gwendolyn Combs, associate professor of management at UNL.
* April 1 -- "Managerial Decision Making, Part 1: Recognizing Decision Traps," Ferguson Center, Terry Sebora, associate professor of management and director of graduate entrepreneurship programs at UNL.
* April 8 -- "Managerial Decision Making, Part 2: Overcoming Decision Traps, Ferguson Center, Sebora.
* April 9 -- "Employment Law, Part 1," Mahoney, 9 a.m.-noon, Mark Fahleson, partner with Remboldt Ludtke and Berger; "Employment Law, Part 2," Mahoney, 1-4 p.m., Fahleson.
* April 15 -- "Powerful Presentations," Ferguson Center, Huber.
* April 22 -- "Role of the Modern Manager: A New Positive Approach," Gallup University, Fred Luthans, George Holmes distinguished professor of management at UNL.
* April 29 -- "Building an Ethical Workplace," Ferguson Center, Mitchell.
* May 6 -- "Role of the Supervisor in the New Environment," Ferguson Center, Luthans.
* May 7 -- "Starting and Owning a Business: Legal and Tax Issues," Lincoln Independent Business Association Conference Room, 620 N. 48th St., Suite 205, Todd Blome, CPA and partner with BMG Certified Public Accountants LLP, and Andrew Loudon, partner with Baylor, Evnen, Curtiss, Grimit and Witt, LLP.

* June 10 -- "Assertive Skills Training," Ferguson Center, Tom O'Connor, founding director of the E.J. Faulkner Writing and Speaking Lab at the UNL College of Business Administration.
* June 17 -- "Organizational Communication," Gallup University, O'Connor.
* June 24 -- "Managing Conflict," Gallup University, Farner.
* July 1 -- "Creative Solutions in Management," Ferguson Center, Richard Kimbrough, senior- and graduate-level management instructor at UNL and owner of a seminar and speaking business.
* July 15 -- "Workplace Dignity," Gallup University, Kristen Lucas, assistant professor of communication studies at UNL.
Any of these seminars can count toward completion of a UNL Business Seminars Management Development Certificate. Seminar registration and information on the three levels of certificates offered is available by telephone at (402) 472-0860 and on the Web, www.mds.unl.edu. Participation in the certificate program is not a requirement to attend the seminars. The registration fee for each seminar is $129.
