Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb. 23-27

Lincoln, Neb., February 18th, 2009 —

A week to "Be Real...Be True...Be You...Head 2 Toe!" is planned at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Feb. 23-27 in observance of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

The week begins with the Heather Ames presentation, "Be Real...Be True...Be You...Head 2 Toe!" at 8 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. Ames is president of Head 2 Toe Consulting Group, image consultants whose main goal is to help individuals discover who they are as persons, both inside and out.

Events in the Nebraska Union continue with a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 on the "F Words: Food, Fear, Fitness, Fat Fads." There will also be the presentation, "Can You Be Fit and Fat?" by Jeffrey Rudy, assistant professor of practice in nutrition and health sciences at UNL, at 7 p.m. Feb. 25. Caleb Mitchell will talk on "Eating Disorders and Spirituality," at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27.

The week continues with the daily trivia contest of "Fact or Crap" at various campus locations including Campus Recreation, Selleck Dining Hall, Harper Schramm Smith Dining Hall, Abel Sandoz Dining Hall, and the Nebraska Union.

The University Health Center student group SHINE (Students Helping Individuals Nurture Esteem) will also have two brown bag lunch presentations in the Nebraska Union. The presentations are: "New Beginnings -- How to Help A Friend," 11 a.m., Feb. 24; and "Eating Mindfully," noon, Feb. 25.

The Great Jeans Giveaway, sponsored by Greeks Promoting Positive Attitudes, will also be held in conjunction with eating disorders awareness week; boxes to donate jeans that no longer fit will be at each event and all sorority houses.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week began as a national outreach campaign sponsored by the Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention organization, a national nonprofit organization. This marks the 13th year UNL has observed the week. The Eating Disorder Education and Prevention Student Association planned all activities sponsored on campus to foster healthy ideas and encourage students to develop self-esteem and self-respect based on wellness principles.

A week to "Be Real...Be True...Be You...Head 2 Toe!" is sponsored by the Eating Disorders Education and Prevention Student Association; SHINE; Greeks Promoting Positive Attitudes; University Health Center; Campus Recreation Center; University Program Council; and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
