UNL journalism students awarded internships

Lincoln, Neb., March 13th, 2009 —

Undergraduate students in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications have been awarded internships by businesses and state agencies.

The internships allow the students to apply what they have learned in their classes and laboratories at the university while picking up valuable on-the-job experience as they prepare for careers in various aspects of journalism.

Following is a list by hometown of UNL journalism students with internships. Information includes the name of the company or agency where the student interns and a brief description of his or her basic responsibilities.

NEBRASKA

Arlington: Jill Kruger, junior, agricultural journalism, North Central Risk Management Education Center, communication specialist for 12 states, creates informational material about the center, produces segments for the "Market Journal" show, serves as a liaison between senators, representatives and the center.

Blair: Katie Goeken, senior, advertising, University Directories in Lincoln, following a one-week training session in North Carolina, contacts Lincoln businesses to solicit advertising for the University Directory.

Blue Hill: Rita Wallace, senior, agricultural journalism and advertising/public relations emphasis, winner of Ralston E. Graham Internship, awarded to outstanding ag journalism students, works in print and electronic media for the Communication and Information Technology office of the UNL Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Broken Bow: Carson Vaughn, sophomore, news-editorial, editorial intern, copy edits, designs, writes satire at The Onion in New York City.

Cairo: Tina Hargens, senior, advertising, writes copy for Bozell and Jacobs advertising agency in Omaha.

Clearwater: Megan Kester, sophomore, advertising, designs signs and T-shirts at Grafted Tree Engraving in O'Neill.

Cook: Marcus Sheer, junior, news-editorial, public relations intern, pitches stories to radio stations across the nation at CRC Public Relations in Alexandria, Va.

Hartington: Anne Potts, senior, advertising, writes press releases, fulfills database marketing requests, participates in event coordination Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln.

Hastings: Michaella Kumke, senior, advertising/public relations emphasis, Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, in charge of organizing and coordinating volunteers and restaurant donors for pledge drives, analyzes and compiles data for membership staff.

Kearney: Spencer Schubert, junior, broadcasting, NTV News in Kearney, anchors the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. sports news.

Lexington: Brett Lahm, junior, advertising, development assistant at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands in Omaha, writing news releases, event planning and grant writing.

Lincoln: Andy Boyle, senior, news-editorial and broadcasting, reporting intern at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, writing on the police beat; Evan Bland, senior, broadcasting and news-editorial, Norfolk Daily News, reporting intern; Sarah Claus, senior, advertising, Lincoln Saltdogs baseball team, assists in promotions, ticket and merchandise sales, and in stadium operations; Brooke Gillies, senior, advertising, marketing intern at the Downtown Lincoln Association; Emily Ingram, junior, news-editorial and broadcasting, copy editor at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette; Stephanie Ruiz, junior, broadcasting, Time Warner Cable, Lincoln, assists in writing newsletters, producer for community channel, promote political awareness and coordinating events.

Minden: Whitney Schwenka, junior, broadcasting, public relations internship at the FirsTier Event Center in Kearney, writing, editing, filming and reporting.

North Platte: Bryan Mohr, junior, advertising, Fusebox advertising agency in Lincoln.

Ogallala: Morgan Haverman, junior, communication studies with a public relations and marketing emphasis, D. Overstreet Sports Management Corp./lnspiration Athlete Sports Marketing Division, signing potential recruits and doing promotional work for corporation.

Ralston: Carly Wendt, junior, advertising/public relations' emphasis, Bozell and Jacobs advertising agency in Omaha, working as the new business intern with seven other specialized interns in creating marketing plans for a business.

Scottsbluff: Brian Hernandez, senior, news-editorial, reporting intern at the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Syracuse: Sara Schroeder, junior, advertising/public relations emphasis, helps plan fall and spring Career Fairs at Career Services in Lincoln.
