The annual Nebraska Economics Challenge State Championship pits high school teams from across the state in a competition to determine who has the greater knowledge of economics.
The top 15 teams of students in Nebraska, determined by an online qualifying round of testing, will meet at the Nebraska Champions Club, 707 Stadium Drive on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 28. Competing schools include: Ashland-Greenwood, Bellevue East, Bellevue West, Dorchester, Elkhorn, Fullerton, Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer, Lincoln Northeast, Omaha Central, Platteview, Southwest in Indianola, Spalding, Twin River and Waverly.
Teams will compete in one of two divisions, Adam Smith or David Ricardo. The first three rounds of the four-round competition focus on the broad range of economics issues from an international and national view to individual decision making behavior.
In the final round, the top two teams in each division will compete in a fast-paced quiz bowl to determine the two winning teams, which will advance to the regional competition April 27 in Houston. The winning team from the Regional Economics Challenge competition will compete in the National Economics Challenge in New York City.
The event is hosted by the UNL Center for Economic Education and is sponsored by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, www.nebraskacouncil.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the economic literacy of Nebraska's students, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City-Omaha Branch, the Council for Economic Education, and Goldman Sachs. The goal of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education is achieved through economic education programs, courses and workshops for educators across the state.
