Lincoln, Neb., April 8th, 2009 —

The Harris Center for Judaic Studies and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present "Returning to Babel: Jewish Latin American Experiences and Representations" April 19-20 at UNL. All symposium events are free and open to the public, and will be held in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St.

The question of Jewish presence in the history, cultures and societies of Latin America -- and the concern with the exclusiveness and marginality of the Jewish communities of Latin America -- is being reevaluated by scholars worldwide. Are notions such as otherness and exclusion still relevant with regard to discussing Latin-American Jews or Jewish Latin-Americans? Are there new representations of "Jewishness" within the Latin American context? This symposium will examine the prevalent paradigms in the area of Latin American Jewish studies from an interdisciplinary standpoint, comprising literature, culture, history, cinematography and visual arts.
