With the United States and the world mired in what many economists have called the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, it may be appropriate that Depression-era films will be featured this summer in the Jensen Cinema 16 "Movies on the Green" series at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Every Thursday night from July 9 through Aug. 13, a movie that debuted from 1937 through 1946 will be screen on the lawn in front of Kimball Recital Hall, 12th and R Streets. The movies will begin at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.). The screenings are free and open to the public and are sponsored by the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University Program Council at UNL, with the assistance of contributions from the Rogers Foundation, the Lincoln Arts Council, IATSE Local 151 (the labor union representing technicians, artisans and craftpersons in the entertainment industry), US Bank and the Friends of the Ross. Popcorn and soft drinks will be available for purchase. The schedule follows:
July 9 -- "You Can't Take it with You," directed by Frank Capra, starring Jimmy Stewart, and Oscar winner for best picture in 1938 (2 hours, 8 minutes).
July 16 -- "A Star Is Born" (1937), directed by William Wellman, starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March (1 hour, 56 minutes).
July 23 -- "Sahara" (1943), directed by Zoltan Korda, a black-and-white World War II action classic about the desperate retreat by a tank battalion across the Sahara Desert (1 hour, 37 minutes).
